The Monastery of Taxiarches

This monastery looks like a medieval castle with its battlements, scalding bowl and high walls which protected it from the attacks of various besiegers. At the top of the stairs on the west, you will see the only entrance. It is so small that you will need to bend in order to be able to pass through it.

Lighthouse At Cape Spathi

The lighthouse was built in 1901 on the steep rocks of Cape Spathi, 65 meters above sea level. It is automatic, with a 18 nautical miles luminosity. The stone finishing around the windows and wall corners make it one of the most beautiful lighthouses of the Cyclades. The old cobblestoned path in front of the lighthouse will lead you to the sea. Many years ago, the lighthouse keepers left their boat on the beach and used the same path to get to the lighthouse.

Castle of Serifos

The view from the castle of Serifos is unique as you can see Sifnos, Kimolos, Milos, Vous, Paros, Syros, Tinos, Mykonos and Serifopoula in the horizon. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. Xenophon mentions the existence of an organized state, with public buildings and temples, on the top of the rock of the main town (Chora). It was a Venetian town which was surrounded by three successive and concentric fortifications.

Mines of Serifos

During the Venetian rule in the 14th century, the mines of the island covered the needs of the great naval power of the time. Travelers back then talked about the work of slaves in the underground tunnels and the existence of four manors.

With the disbanding of the Duchy of the Aegean by the Ottomans in the 16th century, mining was stopped until the 19th century. The mines that opened at Megalo Livadi and Koutalas became the oldest mines of the island. The "Greek Mining Company" started mining ore in 1869 and remained there until 1875.
